This is the website for all information about Djibouti. This page will be a brief summary; and those summaries will be followed by links to our subpages with more specific information.
In the late 19th century, it was ruled by Afar and Somali sultans, who in this time period signed a treaty with the French.
Following this event, occuring in 1967, it was thereafter named the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas.
It remained this way for about 10 years, until June 27, 1977, which was when the Djiboutan people decided to vote for independence, which officially made them an independent country.

Djibouti is a multiethnical and multilingual country, with the biggest ethnic groups being Somali, (60%) and Afar (35%).
Most of the poeple in Djibouti, about 524,000, speak the Somali language, while 306,000 speak Afar as their first languages. The two official languages are Arabic and French.
